ArtOnPaper was initially conceived as an experimental pop-up format, driven by the initiative of Michel Culot in collaboration with the late Pierre Hallet (1953–2021). From the outset, the project was grounded in a precise conviction: that drawing and works on paper constitute a primary site of artistic thinking, rather than a subsidiary practice.

Its ambition was to create a fair dedicated to drawing and paper-based practices, not as a peripheral medium, but as a central language of artistic thought. From its inception, the fair positioned itself as a rigorous platform where works on paper — ancient, modern and contemporary — could be approached in their full conceptual, historical and aesthetic complexity.

Its foundation lies in the conviction that paper is both a site of experimentation and a place of memory, where ideas take form with immediacy and precision. This early intuition rapidly gained structure and visibility.

From 2015 onwards, with the decisive support of Paul Dujardin, ArtOnPaper took on a new scale and found its institutional anchorage at BOZAR. At the instigation of Michel Culot, together with Adeline d’Ursel and Paul Dujardin, a formal collaboration agreement was established to support the creation of a platform dedicated to the promotion of contemporary drawing.

Positioned as a hosted event within BOZAR, the fair developed in close dialogue with the institution, benefiting from its architectural, symbolic and intellectual context.

Today, ArtOnPaper enters a new chapter under the direction of a renewed team. Emmanuelle Indekeu, General and Artistic Director, leads the fair’s strategic and curatorial vision, joined by Louise Malfait, Director of Communication and Experience, who shapes its narratives, formats and modes of engagement. Together, they articulate a vision grounded in depth, coherence and long-term relevance.

In a world undergoing rapid transformation in cultural practices — where lifestyles are continually reshaped by technological acceleration — ArtOnPaper seeks to reaffirm the fundamental role of the art fair: a space for intellectual exchange, social connection and influence. The fair adopts a deliberately refined format, conceived as a timeless capsule in which ancient, modern and contemporary works engage in a demanding and meaningful dialogue.

By embracing values of longevity and human reconnection, ArtOnPaper offers exhibitors a precisely designed setting, bespoke visibility tools, and encounters characterised by a high relational intensity.

ArtOnPaper aspires to act as a catalyst within both the Belgian and international art scenes, positioning itself within a broader cultural ecosystem. More than an event, the fair proposes an intellectual and aesthetic experience — where collecting, discovery and dialogue become a way of life.
